Yuri played his last show with the guys in Las Vegas on July 18th and now many fans are wondering what the future of MxPx is. On the PxPx message board, a few members were asking if or how MxPx should continue now that Yuri has retired and Tom has taken on a full time job. Mike responded with his thoughts on the subject:
"first let me say.. thank you to everyone on here for taking the time to put down your thoughts and ideas.
everyone is right in some ways...
yuri and tom have been great.. and still are... (for the record, tom did miss a tour where Neil from arthur filled in on guitar) so yuri has missed tours.. and tom has missed one.
i haven't missed any.. how could i? even when i was so sick i couldn't talk.. i was still onstage trying while tony from mest was bailing me out one tour.. at least i can play bass no matter how sick i am!!
ok
it's not just economy.. it's life.. i would rather die singing than live not..
but i don't have children. that's just me.
i get by. my TD guys live on 500 a month.. and we make no money on the road.. they live in poverty, the crazy thing is.. a hundred bucks is a lot of money when you have to drive all day and play all night to get it.. then part of it goes in the tank.
funny how the big companies always get their dam money. airlines.. fuel, food.. but music? nope.. we put people on the guest list.. and if it's 5 bucks to get in? let's just go to the next bar..
that's tumbledown.. we don't make money, but we love it! it IS a young man's game. it's hard to sleep on floors.. in the van, or not at all, but it's more life and experience than most people get in 10 years.
it's like a drug. i'm tolerant. yes it's bad for me, for my relationships, for my finance, for my future.. but i'm a junkie and i can't stop. you people in some ways enable me to keep going. in most addiction cases this would be bad, but in this case it's good!!! i need your encouragement to know that what i do matters. .if not.. then i may as well get a real job too..
for yuri and tom.. yes.. they need insurance.. so do i..
who the **** don't? i'm just on a little health plan where i can't really go unless it's an emergency. lucky me. it's still way too expensive.
i think the other mxpx guys will join me in the studio.. if they don't.. i'll make a new punk band.. not metal. but i think they will.
right now tom, yuri and I are feeling really great about our future.. not like we think we'll sell out the enormo dome.. but more like.. we love making records and playing shows.. for yuri and tom. the occational show because they both work full time. me? i work full time, but don't really get paid full time. i'm sure many of you feel the same way!!! but i love it. i need it. i want it. i knew monkey trench wouldn't make money.. studios don't make money anymore.. but i built it because i NEEDED to.
i had to have a place to document my songs. ours songs.
i want to do what's right for the legacy of mxpx. we all helped build it. let's keep building.
mike."
